Tips For Moving Safely During The Pandemic

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

For those of you who have to make a move during this challenging time, we've laid out some tips that you can use to help make your move as safe as possible.

Use new packing supplies In the past, it was common for people to reuse boxes from a grocery or liquor store to try to save money. This approach isn’t recommended during the pandemic, as the New York Times has reported that the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours. We are recommending that customers buy new boxes instead. You can buy boxes from Home Depot, Lowes, or our Online Store.

Check with your moving company In Boston where we are located, moving is considered an “essential service.” As with all things in life, it usually pays to "measure twice and cut once." Call your moving company and verify all the details of your move, ask questions about what precautions the company is taking, and what they will need you to do differently based on the current situation to protect their workers. Husky Moving is currently requiring workers to wear mask and gloves, but I've heard some moving companies in Boston are requiring customers to leave their homes during the move to minimize contact between customers and employees. Ask these questions now to ensure you have adequate time to make alternative plans if the company is taking precautions to your liking or isn't currently doing jobs.

Minimize contact If possible, choose a moving method that minimizes contact between you and other people. If moving on your own over time is an option, you might want to consider that. If you need to hire traditional movers, the key is to practice social distancing whenever possible. Many moving companies are now offering virtual estimates as opposed to in-person versions. They should also be able to leave six feet between you and your family at all times, as well as provide face protection and gloves. You should do your best to do the same.

Provide extra sanitizing materials for move-in day You should be sure to provide enough sanitizing materials and protective equipment for everyone involved in the process. Please keep in mind that while we are doing are absolute best, we are also for all intents and purposes living out of our truck while we are at your home(s). As such, we will all need to work together to ensure everyone is as safe as possible. It can also be VERY challenging to carry extremely heavy items while wearing gloves so please try to be patient with us. Also, understand that switching out gloves, staying certain distances away from eachother, and regular hand washing take time. This will add time onto the job and therefore your bill, but there is no way around that right now.

If you don't feel well please reschedule your move It is absolutely essential for the safety of everyone involved that we do not put our employees or your family members at unnecessary risk.
