When Can You Claim Moving Expenses As A Tax Deduction

Moving expenses can be a significant financial burden, but there are certain circumstances in which you can claim these expenses as a tax deduction.

Firstly, to claim moving expenses as a tax deduction, you must meet the distance test. This test requires that your new job location must be at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your old job location was from your old home. For example, if your old job was located 5 miles from your old home, your new job must be located at least 55 miles from your old home in order to qualify for the distance test.

Secondly, you must meet the time test. This test requires that you must work full-time in the new location for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months after you arrive at your new job location. If you are self-employed, you must work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months after you arrive at your new job location, and at least 78 weeks during the first 24 months after you arrive.

Expenses that qualify for a tax deduction include: Transportation costs for you and your household goods, including the cost of a rental truck or storage fees. Lodging expenses incurred during the move. Costs associated with terminating a lease on your old residence, such as a cancellation fee.

It's important to note that you can only claim moving expenses as a tax deduction if you itemize your deductions on your tax return. If you take the standard deduction, you will not be able to claim moving expenses.

Additionally, you can't deduct the cost of meals or any expenses that were reimbursed by your employer. Overall, claiming moving expenses as a tax deduction can help to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with relocating for a new job. However, it's important to make sure that you meet the distance and time tests, and that you have all of the necessary documentation to support your claim.
